Teachers Worth
Your Time

A convert’s hours are limited, and the internet is full of people willing to fill them. Gathered here are lectures and series from teachers of real training, so that the time you give to learning your faith returns something sound.

Where I would begin

If you are new to Islam and want to understand what Muslims actually believe, and why, start with creed. Everything else in the dīn rests on it. Both series below are taught by the same teacher: begin with the first, and go to the Masterclass when you are ready for more.

Islamic Theology (ʿAqīdah)

Dr. Umar Faruq Abd-Allah

A complete series on Islamic creed taught by Dr. Umar Faruq Abd-Allah, whose Nawawi Foundation Papers are gathered on the Reading page. He teaches creed the way it deserves to be taught, as the ground a life stands on rather than a list to memorize, and he does it in language an American Muslim can follow without needing a specialist’s vocabulary first.

ʿAqīdah Masterclass

Dr. Umar Faruq Abd-Allah

A deeper treatment of creed from the same teacher, for the student who has sat with the foundations and wants to go further into the questions underneath them. Take the series above first if you are beginning; come here when you want the fuller picture.

The argument, in his own voice

Dr. Umar Faruq Abd-Allah speaking in Durban at the Suleman Lockhat Auditorium in November 2017, on the topic of his paper of the same name. If there is one argument in this project’s reading that a convert most needs to hear, it is this one: that she does not have to trade her culture for her faith. Hearing him deliver it is a different experience from reading it. The paper itself is on the Reading page.

The question this project lives in

Dr. Umar Faruq Abd-Allah on Muslim identity, in three parts. This is the closest thing on the page to the question at the center of the Feeling Muslim study: not only what a Muslim believes, but who she understands herself to be, and how that understanding is formed and sustained.

Retreat Lecture

On our duty to creation

Filmed on site at the Zawiyah Rosales in 2017, in the mountains of Granada, Spain. The retreat explored Islamic metaphysics, ethics, and law as they pertain to the stewardship of all living beings, the earth, and the environment.

More to come

This page will grow slowly and with the same care as the rest: only teachers whose training is sound and whose way of speaking a convert can actually receive, in shā Allāh Taʿālā.
